Anna Nordqvist cruises to victory in inaugural LPGA Tournament of Champions

American Anna Nordqvist earned a guaranteed spot in the final two rounds of the 2017 LPGA Tournament of Champions at Kiawah Island. The 29-year-old, an eight-time winner on the LPGA Tour, returned to victory lane on the Capital One Founders Cup’s final day, closing with a bogey-free 6-under 66 for a 72-hole total of 17-under 267, four shots ahead of Northern Ireland’s Holly Clyburn.

“I felt a lot of relief,” Nordqvist said. “It’s been a tough week, so there’s a lot of emotion inside of me. But I still didn’t seem very nervous. There’s so much adrenaline that it gets out of you, and I don’t feel a whole lot of pressure with the way I’m playing right now.”

Clyburn made her first LPGA Tour win possible by shooting a 65. The result left Nordqvist needing to win by three shots or go low to wrap up the top spot, and the Swede responded by making a 39-foot birdie putt on the par-4 11th hole. Her lead reached five strokes before a bogey on the par-3 13th and a bogey on the par-4 15th allowed Clyburn a chance to pull into a tie.

But the American made a three-foot par putt to hold off the 49-year-old Brazilian Paula Reto, who closed with a 66, and Clyburn, who made a 10-footer for birdie on the par-4 18th.

Nordqvist won for the second time in 2017 and the seventh time in her career. “This week just felt good,” Nordqvist said. “Especially with the way I started, having that momentum going into my second round. I thought about it before, like what happens if you shoot 70 today?”
