Lori Chavez-DeRemer, a Republican, Flips an Oregon House Seat and Then a Nevada Senate Seat, Is an Accidental Millionaire
Lori Chavez-DeRemer, a Republican from Corvallis, Oregon, who lost her House seat on Election Day, is the only woman (and only female) in Oregon to flip a House seat since the state switched to Instant Runoff Voting in 2000, and the only Republican to win a seat in Nevada since 2012.
Chavez-DeRemer’s seat in Oregon’s 5th District had been held by Democrat Betsy Johnson since 2006. She won the GOP nomination in 2014 but lost in the general election to Johnson by 10 points.
Oregon’s 5th District (and the neighboring 2nd District) is one of the most competitive House districts in 2018, and the winner of the 5th District will play a key role in whether Democrats keep control of the House or lose it to a Republican. Polling shows Johnson is the favorite to win in November, with the seat now set as a toss-up.
Chavez-DeRemer first won this seat in a special election in 2002. When Johnson retired, she became the first woman to regain the seat. She was reelected in 2006 and 2010, and in 2016, she won re-election by 19 points. She is now the second-highest-ranked woman in Oregon History.
Chavez-DeRemer, a mother of five, is already a millionaire, just the latest in a long line of women to do so.
