The year so far in Toronto has seen a record-breaking number of homicides, more than double the number of homicides at this time last year.
On Tuesday, Ontario Provincial Police reported that a 36-year-old man died after being shot at what appeared to be a targeted scene. Police believe it is the city’s 80th homicide of the year.
In total, there have been 141 homicides so far this year in the city of 2.7 million people. At this point last year, there were just 67.
Cases are investigated by officers across multiple agencies: Police, firefighters, paramedics, community members and investigators from the police’s organized crime unit.
Last week, Toronto Mayor John Tory called a violence spike in the city “unacceptable”
“Our city’s loss of life is simply unacceptable,” he said in a statement . “It is time for the whole city to come together and stop this madness.”
