World Cup football will not be allowed to sponsor World Cup beer in Russia, with all alcohol allowed at the tournament banned, Football Association chairman Greg Dyke has said.

World Cup organisers can only offer a “mild” boycott of alcohol in the venues, says the Football Association (FA) chairman.

World Cup Russia 2018 Organisers of the World Cup are hoping to hold a huge extravaganza in Russia, which has been the site of a soccer tournament since 1966.

Despite all beer being banned at the World Cup, the FA’s Greg Dyke is ready to negotiate a licensing deal with Russian beer distributors.

“We have made the decision that the World Cup in Russia will not sell alcohol sponsorship,” Dyke told reporters.

“We will not be going to the length of a ban, as there are plenty of other options we could look at.”

But he reiterated that it was “not a decision we’ve taken lightly”, with the tournament being watched by tens of millions of people in Russia.

“We have listened and consulted in full and there is a strong appetite for that sort of thing, so no decision has been taken yet, but that is something we’re going to be exploring,” Dyke said.

“We have to look at the situation, we have to look at what’s going on in terms of football, what our customers want and how we can work with the sponsors and the event organisers to provide football for all in Russia and to give people a really positive experience.”

The tournament is held for the first time on the African continent and Dyke’s comments suggest the presence of alcohol won’t be an obstacle in getting sponsors onboard.
