But there are reasons why it may be less than surprising that the Black Lives Matter movement’s most outspoken critic, with its own history of activism that began in the movement-led Ferguson protests, is once again engaging in public discourse.

Sies Marjan, one of the most prominent and influential figures in the Black Lives Matter movement, recently published a new book. But there are reasons why it may be less than surprising that the Black Lives Matter movement’s most outspoken critic, with its own history of activism that began in the movement-led Ferguson protests, is once again engaging in public discourse.

The Movement’s Most Outspoken Critic

When Sies Marjan announced her new book, “Color of the Word: Finding the Truth from the Most Unexamined and Powerful Sources,” in March 2013, she took particular aim at those who claim that it was always the case that the movement’s most vocal members were white.

At the time, Marjan was a member of the #BlackLivesMatter movement. She was a founding member of, and has been an activist-in-residence for, a Black Lives Matter-affiliated college. While she is not the author of her title, I reviewed this book for the New York Times, and I am pleased that the Times published my review, saying that Marjan’s book represents an important contribution to the public debate on the movement’s legacy.
